Castle of Old Alonissos

The highest point of the Old Village, known as “The Castle”, has been inhabited since 700 BC and acquired its character during the Venetian occupation in the 16th century. The fortification was based on the outer walls of the houses without perimeter walls. The main entrance, the castle door, does not survive, and there was a secondary escape route, the Paraport. Within the castle there was a hidden gallery leading to a forest for shelter. In 1538, the pirate Barbarossa captured the Castle and exterminated the island’s population, with reports of extreme atrocities.
